This charming eight bedroom beach house is set in its own private, lush five acre estate in the picturesque village of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and close to fashionable shabby chic Biarritz.

Sleeping 16 guests, the villa exudes a homely farmhouse feel styled with a splash of seaside décor. Each bedroom is ensuite with dreamy Atlantic and Pyrenees views to wake up to and wow at.

Available with a private chef or on a self-catering basis the villa also offers a handy Concierge Service (we like to look after those little details for our guests).

We like our guests to feel at home. You can pad about in your bare feet or keep your shoes on. It is a great place to experience a week or just a weekend holiday for friends, families, couples and special events such as weddings and birthdays.

Guests can laze in the sleek salt water swimming pool and soak up the rays on neighbouring Lafitenia beach (it's at the bottom of our garden) or explore the Basque/L'Aquitaine region famous for its world class surfing, thalassotherapy, Michelin star gastronomy, vineyards and quirky local fetes.

Room Rental

Maison Tamarin is a family built and run villa and estate blooming with lavender and cool palms. In a spectacular setting with views over the rugged Pyrenees and Atlantic it is the perfect place to experience French life at your own pace.

We welcome guests for just a weekend stay on a bed and breakfast basis. Our bedrooms and suites are all ensuite and individual featuring a fresh interior style of blues and whites, mosaic and checkered Basque linen with a humorous French cockerel here and there. Rooms come with fluffy bathrobes and botanical and luxurious L'Occitane bathroom treats. All bedrooms open onto the garden or a private balcony.

There is also the option of a set menu which will depend on what the catch of the day is and what we pull out of the garden.

Location

We are easy to find! If you are hopping on a flight the nearest airport is Biarritz (12km) and the villa is located 4km from the centre of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and also 1 hour drive from Pau airport or Lourdes airport, 1 hour 30 drive from Bilbao airport (Spain) and 2 hours' drive from San Sebastian airport (Spain) or Bordeaux airport.

Service

The type of service is up to you. The villa can be rented on a self-catering basis or with a trained chef exclusively for a week or just bed and breakfast for a weekend. For the foodies afternoon tea, canapés, dinner, bbq and picnics for the beach can be whipped up. The chef, Jamie, uses freshly sourced ingredients and specialises in local recipes with an emphasis on fish and seafood.

ACTIVITIES

The south-west coast of France, with Spain just over the border, is rich with history, culture, sports, food, wine and beauty from the coast to the mountains. As well as simply enjoying the villa, it is a superb base for exploring and our Concierge Service will be happy to assist you.

Beaches

The beaches in the area are some of France's best beaches. The closest beaches are Lafitenia (beside the villa), Mayarco and Grande Plage which has four beach clubs. Watersports such as surfing, sailing and windsurfing are available.

Surfing

The Basque coast is one of the top destinations in Europe for surfers from all over the world. Lafitenia beach, overlooked by the villa, hosted the 1999 and 2000 Quiksilver World Masters championships. There are plenty of surf schools, camps and equipment hire shops for those who want to learn.

Walking

This is a great way to explore the rustic villages and the beautiful countryside and nature. There are good coastal paths near Saint-Jean-de-Luz and also the extensive Pyrenees to hike in.

Sightseeing

Soak up the Basque culture by visiting a chocolate tasting factory in the cultural capital Bayonne. Explore the many picturesque countryside one-street villages and sample local produce from the farmers market in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Visit Bilbao, renowned for its culture, superb gastronomy and the Guggenheim museum.

Golf

The Pays Basque has a long history of golf dating back to the early 19th century and with 11 golf courses including the famous Le Phare it is a renowned golfing destination. We would be happy to arrange tee off times for you at one of the clubs.

Spa

Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a spa town and the area is well known for thalassotherapy which is a treatment with salt water, seaweed and algae and works for anything from migraines to rheumatism to sprained ankles. There are several spas to indulge in this in the town.

Children

There are plenty of activities for children at the villa and in the area such as pony trekking. The nearby beaches are excellent for families and have pedalos for hire and children's clubs. We can also arrange for a nanny or babysitting.

Shopping

Saint-Jean-de-Luz has some pretty boutiques in the winding streets of the historic old town just 50 metres from the beach. There are also daily markets selling local produce. There is a wider range of shopping nearby in Biarritz and San Sebastian.

Gastronomy

The Pays Basque area which spills over into the north of Spain has incredible food and wine from the vineyards of Bordeaux to the restaurants of San Sebastian which is home to more Michelin Star restaurants than any other European city. We would be happy to arrange a table reservation for you.

Local Culture

The Pays Basque is a vibrant area and very proud of its heritage and traditions. Local festivals throughout the year include the Fete de Saint Jean, the Fete du Thon and Le Rallye de la Mer. Pelota is a fast and exciting sport played both here and internationally and you can spectate at a game.
